New angkor market opens in siem reap, Cambodia

Situated on Preah Sihanouk Avenue, which connects the northern route to Angkor Wat, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the centre of Siem Reap, Angkor Market is a two-storey red brick building surrounded by the century-old cultural heritage of the Grand Angkor Hotel, the Angkor National Museum and the Amansara Resort.

The architects aim to fill a gap in the urban fabric and create a new meeting place while maintaining the harmony of the existing area. The market includes grocery stores, pharmacies, stationery and home appliances.

The market aims to support local farmers from Mount Kulen, where the area has historical significance, and dedicates its space to the display and sale of locally grown fruits and vegetables. The design is utilitarian and pure architectural. Its main components are concrete, metal and traditional building materials, including local red bricks and hand-made Khmer tiles, all chosen for their practicality.

The exposed brick façade creates a timeless, earthy and natural appearance, enhancing the architectural character of the surroundings. From a structural point of view, the stability of the brick walls depends solely on their undulating form and the interlocking of the bricks. Palm trees are located at street level, creating a visual connection with the brick façade. At ground level, the large entrance space, with higher ceilings, is covered with graceful patterned shadows created by the soft natural light that penetrates through the lattice and tropical garden.
